Wisconsin VA Applies Program 2 Treat Suicide As A Disease

The Wisconsin Veterans Administration has implemented the Zero Veteran Suicide Initiative.  This approach identifies suicide as a disease that can be treated.  This is a significant initiative because today about 413 thousand military veterans call Wisconsin home.

This is training the community to understand this can happen to any family.  The initiative presents the (QPR) style known as Question, Persuade, and Refer.  This starts with learning the warning signs.  Persuading the individual to shift the focus of their attention.  And referring the individual to services that can intervene rapidly.  QPR is an evidence based process performed since 1995 (Paul Quinnett).

This approach pushes resources (training) to the setting (family) the urgent need has been shown to most frequently appear.  This strengthens the concept of a partnership where healing takes an undetermined amount of time and we all work together to help.

This is a bridge that communicates the severity and frequency of a preventable disease process.  The community can see the importance of guiding an individual through this temporary period toward a safer continued existence.  The individual belongs in the community and we all need them to continue to be part of our life experiences.

The staff of Home Care Path are expecting good results from this Veterans Administration initiative.
